Jakarta, ThedailyID — The Democratic Party has taken control of both chambers of the United States Congress after the November 3 midterm elections. The result creates a major political challenge for President Donald Trump and the Republican Party.
According to CNN’s vote count on Thursday morning, November 5, Democrats secured 245 seats in the House of Representatives. Republicans held 145 seats. In the Senate, Democrats won 54 seats, while Republicans secured 44.
With control of both chambers, Democrats can challenge Trump’s legislative priorities. Their majority could also influence government funding, congressional investigations, and foreign policy decisions.
Trump’s Legislative Agenda Faces Obstacles
Trump could have pursued his legislative agenda more easily if Republicans had retained control of Congress. However, Democratic control will make negotiations more difficult.
The president will now need bipartisan support to pass legislation. This challenge will be greater for proposals that Democrats oppose.
Meanwhile, negotiations over government funding and the federal debt ceiling could trigger further disputes. Democrats may use these discussions to push for concessions from the Trump administration.
Consequently, disagreements between Congress and the White House could lead to legislative deadlock.
Investigations and Possible Impeachment
Democrats are also expected to intensify investigations into Trump, the White House, and companies linked to his administration.
Their congressional majority gives committee members the authority to issue subpoenas. These legal orders can compel individuals to provide documents or testify.
CNN and NBC News reported that Democratic lawmakers plan to use their new majority to investigate Trump’s actions and those of his allies.
Furthermore, the election result could revive discussions about impeachment. The House of Representatives impeached Trump twice during his first presidential term.
However, the Senate acquitted him in both trials. As a result, he remained in office.
Iran War Could Face Greater Congressional Scrutiny
Democratic control could also affect Trump’s military campaign against Iran.
Democrats have repeatedly criticized the president’s approach to the conflict. Therefore, they could challenge future requests for additional military funding.
However, Tirta Parsi, executive vice president of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, said Democrats might avoid blocking military funds. They could face accusations of weakening American forces.
Instead, Democrats could use their congressional authority to investigate the war. They could also examine whether the Trump administration has followed legal requirements during its military operations.
Nevertheless, it remains uncertain whether Democratic lawmakers will unite behind efforts to restrict the campaign.
The new Congress is scheduled to take office on January 3, 2027. Until then, Republicans retain control of the outgoing Congress. This gives the Trump administration a limited period to pursue its remaining legislative priorities.
