Jakarta, ThedailyID — Israel’s military chief, Eyal Zamir, has reportedly clashed with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the country’s strategy toward Iran.
The reported dispute comes amid growing concerns among Israeli security officials that direct military strikes alone cannot overthrow Iran’s government.
Israeli broadcaster Channel 12 described the confrontation as an “unprecedented” dispute. The report said tensions had intensified in recent hours amid disagreements over Iran and the broader security situation.
Zamir and several senior security officials reportedly fear the government’s approach could lead to miscalculations and dangerous military escalation with Iran. Their concerns have also emerged ahead of Israel’s upcoming elections.
Military officials have also expressed concern that the Iran issue could become a tool for political purposes. The reported disagreement highlights tensions between Israel’s political leadership and military establishment over how to deal with Tehran.
Military Strikes May Not Topple Iran’s Government
Meanwhile, Israeli public broadcaster Kan 11 cited sources close to Netanyahu and senior security officials who questioned whether military action could achieve regime change in Iran.
According to those sources, military operations could weaken the Iranian government but would not necessarily cause its collapse.
That assessment reportedly contrasts with Netanyahu’s recent statements. In recent days, he has called for completing the mission against Iran and overthrowing its government during the remainder of US President Donald Trump’s term.
However, Netanyahu has previously expressed a different position on regime change. Middle East Monitor reported that approximately six months ago, he said the decision to overthrow Iran’s government rested with the Iranian people.
The reported differences underscore the challenges facing Israel’s leadership as it weighs military pressure against the potential consequences of a wider conflict.
