Jakarta, ThedailyID — Buying toys does not always stop when people grow up. Many adults still collect figurines, build LEGO sets, race remote-controlled cars, or paint miniature models.
For some, the appeal goes beyond playing. They enjoy assembling models, adding details, and displaying their collections. So, what makes these hobbies attractive in adulthood?
A study published in Simulation & Gaming explored this question through the experiences of adult miniature enthusiasts in Finland. Researchers analyzed responses from participants aged 18 to 56. They examined why adults continue to assemble, paint, collect, and play with miniature figures.
One key factor was creativity. Building and painting miniatures allows people to develop skills and express their ideas. They can choose colors, add details, and shape the final result to match their vision.
For some participants, creating the miniature was more enjoyable than playing with it. The process itself offered satisfaction, especially when separate pieces came together to form a finished model.
Nostalgia also plays a role
Childhood memories can make certain toys especially meaningful. A study published in Qualitative Market Research, An International Journal examined how nostalgia relates to collecting vintage toys in online collector communities.
The findings suggest that nostalgia can motivate people to start collecting. Memories of a particular toy or an interest in objects from the past can encourage collectors to seek out specific items.
These emotional connections can also shape a collection over time. Someone might keep searching for a particular figurine because it reminds them of childhood or another meaningful period in their life.
Having their own income makes a difference
Financial independence can also make buying toys more appealing. As adults earn their own money, they gain the freedom to purchase items they once could only admire in stores or hope to receive as birthday gifts.
For some, completing a collection also fulfills a childhood wish that never came true. Buying a long-desired toy can offer a sense of personal satisfaction.
However, nostalgia is not the only reason adults develop these hobbies. Some discover miniature building or collecting later in life. Others simply enjoy the creative process, the challenge of finding specific items, or connecting with fellow enthusiasts.
Ultimately, adult toy collecting can combine creativity, imagination, personal satisfaction, social connections, and memories of the past. Enjoying toys as an adult does not necessarily mean someone wants to return to childhood. Sometimes, the hobby simply brings enjoyment into everyday life.
