Jakarta, ThedailyID — Parents often want to give their children the best. However, some parenting habits may unintentionally affect how children develop emotionally and socially.

Psychotherapist Chelsey Cole, who focuses on narcissistic abuse, said narcissistic traits can begin developing during childhood. Even well-intentioned parents may contribute to these patterns without realizing it.

Cole said narcissism tends to develop in environments that combine excessive indulgence with a lack of emotional nurturing, according to USA Today.

Here are seven parenting mistakes that may encourage narcissistic behavior in children.

1. Always Making the Child the Center of Attention

Giving children attention and affection is important. However, they also need to learn that other people have feelings, needs and boundaries.

If everything constantly revolves around the child, they may become less aware of how their behavior affects others. Teaching empathy and responsibility from an early age can help children understand that not everything should center on them.

2. Never Allowing Children to Fail

Parents may feel the need to defend their children in every situation. However, constantly protecting them from failure can create a sense of entitlement.

Children need opportunities to experience disappointment and frustration. These experiences can help them understand limits and develop resilience.

3. Praising Children Excessively

Praise can support a child’s development, but too much praise may create unrealistic expectations. Constantly telling children that they are exceptional or deserve more can encourage narcissistic behavior.

Children need encouragement that is appropriate to their efforts and achievements. Balanced feedback can help them develop confidence without creating an exaggerated sense of superiority.

4. Focusing Too Much on Image

Parents who place excessive importance on appearance, status or achievements may unintentionally teach children to seek validation from others.

Children also need to learn the value of genuine relationships. Healthy social connections can help them develop emotional security and empathy.

5. Failing to Recognize Their Own Bad Behavior

Children learn by observing the adults around them. If parents regularly become angry, insult others or behave aggressively, children may begin to see those behaviors as normal.

Parents can instead demonstrate healthy emotional regulation in everyday situations. Children can then learn how to manage emotions by observing how their parents respond to difficult moments.

6. Not Validating a Child’s Emotions

Ignoring, mocking or dismissing a child’s feelings can make them believe that their emotions are wrong.

Parents can help by identifying and naming the emotion the child is experiencing. They can acknowledge the feeling while still setting boundaries around inappropriate behavior.

7. Not Correcting Narcissistic Behavior Early

Parents should not simply ignore excessive behavior when children throw tantrums or demand special treatment.

Instead, parents can ask what happened, how the child felt and how their behavior affected other people. This can help children develop empathy, social awareness and emotional regulation.

These parenting mistakes do not mean a child will inevitably develop narcissistic traits. With conscious and consistent parenting, children can continue learning empathy, responsibility and self-control as they grow.
