Jakarta, ThedailyID — Volcanic ash can affect air quality both outdoors and indoors, raising questions about whether it is safe to use an air conditioner during an eruption.

The answer depends on the intensity of the ashfall. During light ashfall, people can generally continue using an AC if they keep doors and windows tightly closed.

Is It Safe to Use AC During Volcanic Ashfall?

Split and window AC units typically recirculate indoor air rather than directly drawing air from outside. Keeping the house sealed can therefore help limit the amount of volcanic ash entering the room.

However, heavy ashfall can create both health and technical concerns. Ash can accumulate on the outdoor components of an AC unit, including the condenser. This buildup can cause overheating and affect the cooling system.

People should clean their AC units after ashfall, whether the ash is light or heavy. A vacuum cleaner can help remove accumulated particles.

However, caution is needed when cleaning the outdoor unit. Wetting external components can create electrical problems if water reaches the coil or circuit board.

An AC also cannot remove ash that continuously enters from outside. Therefore, keeping doors and windows closed remains important during periods of heavy ashfall.

What About AC in Cars?

People who must travel during heavy volcanic ashfall should keep their car windows closed and avoid using the AC.

According to Visor, outside air can enter through a vehicle’s ventilation system when the AC operates. During heavy ashfall, the car’s air recirculation system may also fail to filter all volcanic particles.

As a result, some volcanic ash may enter the cabin and be inhaled by passengers.

Consider Using an Air Purifier

An air purifier can provide additional protection indoors. The device can help filter particles such as dust, smoke and other pollutants from indoor air.

Volcanic ash can also worsen respiratory conditions, including asthma and allergic rhinitis. People with these conditions should maintain their regular medication, prepare emergency medicines and have a plan in case symptoms become worse.

Overall, AC use during light ashfall can generally continue when the building remains properly sealed. During heavy ashfall, however, people should prioritize limiting outside air entry and protect both their health and cooling equipment.
