Jakarta, ThedailyID — Bringing a sex toy on a trip may not be something passengers want to discuss with airport security. But if the device uses a rechargeable lithium battery, putting it in checked luggage could create a safety risk.
The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) advises passengers to carry lithium battery-powered devices, including rechargeable sex toys, in their cabin baggage.
The advice comes from concerns over lithium batteries overheating and catching fire. Passengers should therefore check where they store battery-powered devices before boarding a flight.
An aviation authority representative said some sensitive personal items may actually be safer in carry-on luggage.
“Stories often circulate about airport security officers taking a dildo out of a backpack during a bag search. That is a situation we consider preferable to having a lithium battery device placed in checked baggage,” the representative said, as quoted by Daily Star, Wednesday (26/08).
Although passengers may feel embarrassed if a personal item appears during a security check, carrying it in the cabin can reduce the safety risks associated with lithium batteries in checked luggage.
It’s Not Just About Sex Toys
The CAA’s advice does not specifically target sex toys. They are simply one example of rechargeable electronic devices that may contain lithium batteries.
Common devices such as smartphones, laptops, tablets and cameras also use lithium batteries.
According to the CAA, improperly packed lithium batteries are increasingly causing problems during flights. If a potentially dangerous device is found in checked baggage, the airline may have to remove the luggage before the flight can continue.
A battery fire can create a more serious situation. In some circumstances, an aircraft may need to divert its route or carry out an evacuation.
The CAA estimates that around 30 million passengers will travel from the UK during July and August. With each passenger carrying an average of four lithium battery-powered devices, millions of such devices could be traveling by air.
So, when packing for a trip, the issue is not only keeping a personal item out of sight. If it contains a lithium battery, where you pack it also matters.
For rechargeable devices, keeping them in your carry-on may be a safer option than placing them in checked luggage.
