Jakarta, ThedailyID — Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) is still being hit by aftershocks following the major earthquake that struck the region. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) recorded 7,492 aftershocks as of Wednesday (Aug. 26).
The data was updated at 5 a.m. WIB, with the strongest aftershock reaching magnitude 6.2 and the weakest measuring 1.0. BMKG also recorded 33 aftershocks above magnitude 5, while 143 tremors were directly felt by residents.
The earthquake sequence has continued to affect communities across several regencies. Authorities have reported 103 deaths, including 41 in Manggarai, 34 in East Manggarai, 13 in Nagekeo, six in Sikka, five in Ngada, three in Ende, and one in West Manggarai.
The number of injured victims has also risen. The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) recorded an additional 63 injured people, bringing the total to 1,666.
The ongoing aftershocks have added to the challenges facing affected communities as authorities continue assessing the damage and responding to victims.
BMKG continues to monitor the seismic activity, while residents in affected areas are urged to remain alert to further tremors and follow instructions from local authorities.
