How a Threads Account Is Helping Indonesians Rediscover Jakarta's Historic Mosques

Jakarta, ThedailyID — A local content creator is using Threads to introduce people to Jakarta’s historic mosques, combining historical storytelling with practical travel guides that encourage residents to explore the city’s religious heritage.

The initiative comes from Pramudya, the creator behind the Threads account @darimasjid_kemasjid, which documents centuries-old mosques across the Indonesian capital.

While Istiqlal Mosque remains Jakarta’s best-known religious landmark, the city is home to more than a hundred historic mosques that have played important roles in its cultural and urban development.

Pramudya said the idea began as a way to help Jakarta residents find alternative places to pray during the crowded Eid al-Fitr period while avoiding heavy traffic.

His interest in photography and history led him to join walking tours around Jakarta, where he photographed historic buildings and learned about their backgrounds. He later combined those findings with practical information, including public transportation routes and estimated walking distances to each mosque.

“I first joined walking tours to take photos, but I also learned a great deal about Jakarta’s history. I realized many unique mosques helped shape the city, and Threads became the ideal platform to tell those stories through writing,” Pramudya said.

Among the mosques featured are Masjid Guru Mughni and Masjid Jami Mubarok near Jalan Jenderal Gatot Subroto.

Masjid Guru Mughni is known for educating prominent Islamic scholars, while Masjid Jami Mubarok is widely regarded as the first mosque established in Jakarta’s Kuningan area.

Pramudya has also documented Masjid Al Islam, located opposite the headquarters of Indonesia’s national shipping company PELNI. Historical records identify it as Jakarta’s first mosque to deliver sermons in the Malay language.

His posts have attracted thousands of readers, many of whom contribute additional historical information in the comments, helping enrich the archive.

As of June 2026, the account had documented dozens of historic mosques. Through a combination of storytelling, walking routes, and public transport guidance, @darimasjid_kemasjid aims to make Jakarta’s Islamic heritage more accessible while encouraging residents to preserve the city’s historical legacy.
