Jakarta, ThedailyID — OpenAI has officially released its GPT-5.6 family of AI models for general users after completing a limited preview. The new lineup includes Sol as the flagship model, Terra for everyday work, and Luna as the most affordable option.
In late June, OpenAI limited GPT-5.6 to licensed partners after a request from the U.S. government. The company described the move as a temporary measure while regulators reviewed next-generation AI systems.
After completing the preview, OpenAI expanded GPT-5.6 to users worldwide.
“We are releasing the GPT-5.6 family for general availability after a limited preview,” OpenAI said on Friday, July 10.
The company said the lineup includes Sol, Terra, and Luna for different computing needs.
According to OpenAI, Sol delivers leading performance in coding, scientific reasoning, cybersecurity, and knowledge-based tasks. It also uses tokens more efficiently than previous models and several competitors.
OpenAI also introduced Ultra mode, which coordinates multiple AI agents to complete complex workflows.
In addition, the company improved computer-use capabilities and design judgment. These features allow the models to review and refine their work before delivering results.
OpenAI said GPT-5.6 Sol scored 53.6 on the Agents’ Last Exam benchmark, which evaluates professional workflows across 55 fields. The company said the score surpassed Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5 by 13.1 points.
For coding tasks, Sol outperformed Claude Fable 5 by 2.8 points on the Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index. It also generated fewer output tokens.
OpenAI also reported stronger cybersecurity performance. GPT-5.6 scored 73.5% on ExploitBench2, compared with 47.9% for GPT-5.5.
Verified users and organizations can access defensive cybersecurity tools through the Trusted Access for Cyber program.
OpenAI said GPT-5.6 remains below its critical safety thresholds despite stronger capabilities in biology and cybersecurity.
The company also completed its largest safety evaluation to date, using about 700,000 GPU hours for automated red-team testing.
GPT-5.6 is now available through ChatGPT, Codex, and the OpenAI API. OpenAI expects the rollout to finish within 24 hours.
The flagship Sol model costs US$5 per one million input tokens and US$30 per one million output tokens. Terra costs US$2.50 and US$15, while Luna costs US$1 and US$6.
