Jakarta, ThedailyID — Cristiano Ronaldo believes Portugal can overcome Spain when the Iberian rivals meet in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 at Dallas Stadium on Tuesday, July 7.
Portugal enters the knockout match after a dramatic 2-1 victory over Croatia in the Round of 32. Spain, meanwhile, secured a convincing 3-0 win over Austria to reach the last 16.
Speaking to Al Jazeera, Ronaldo acknowledged that Spain ranks among the favorites to win the tournament. However, he said knockout football often produces unpredictable results.
“Spain is always a candidate to win the European Championship and the Nations League. They have already won those competitions,” Ronaldo said.
“They are the favorites because they have won more titles than Portugal. But this is a different competition with different players. There are injuries, and there is also the heat,” he added.
Ronaldo also reflected on his long history against Spain. The veteran forward said their previous meetings have been closely contested throughout his international career.
“I enjoy playing against Spain. My record against them is quite good. I’ve played them 10 or 11 times, and it’s been very balanced. The winner will be decided by the smallest details,” he said.
Despite Spain’s status as favorites, Ronaldo expressed confidence that Portugal would advance.
“I have a strong feeling that we are going to win,” he said.
The 41-year-old also admitted that the 2026 World Cup could be his final appearance in the tournament. Even so, he insisted he is focused on extending Portugal’s campaign.
“My job is to enjoy it if this is my last World Cup. But I don’t believe this will be my last match because I want us to keep moving forward,” Ronaldo said.
