M5.9 Quake Hits Mindanao, BMKG Says No Tsunami Threat to Indonesia

Jakarta, ThedailyID — A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck Mindanao in the southern Philippines on Monday, July 6, with tremors felt across parts of North Sulawesi, Indonesia.

Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) confirmed that the offshore earthquake does not pose a tsunami threat to Indonesia.

According to BMKG, the earthquake occurred at 3:11 p.m. WIB at a depth of 29 kilometers.

The epicenter was located at sea, approximately 165 kilometers northwest of Tahuna in the Sangihe Islands.

BMKG’s ShakeMap estimated strong shaking across several islands in the Sangihe Islands Regency, North Sulawesi.

The agency recorded an intensity of V on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale on Marore Island. At this level, most people can feel the shaking, some household items may fall, and larger objects may sway.

Kendahe and Nusa Tabukan experienced intensity IV MMI, where many people indoors and some outdoors could feel the earthquake.

Elsewhere, Ternate, Tidore, Sanana, and Morotai in North Maluku reported intensity III MMI. Residents in Tahuna and Melonguane, North Sulawesi, also felt moderate shaking.

As of 3:45 p.m. WIB, BMKG had recorded one aftershock measuring magnitude 5.3, according to BMKG Director of Earthquakes and Tsunami, Wijayanto.

Authorities continue to monitor seismic activity, but no tsunami warning has been issued.
