Jakarta, ThedailyID — British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his resignation after serving less than two years in office. His departure comes after mounting political pressure, falling public approval, and growing dissatisfaction within his own Labour Party.
Starmer confirmed his decision on Monday, describing his time as prime minister as “the greatest honor” of his life. However, he admitted that his party no longer believed he was the right leader for the next general election.
During an emotional resignation speech, Starmer thanked his family and supporters. He struggled to hold back tears before embracing his wife, Victoria, at the end of his address.
Starmer led the Labour Party to a landslide victory in the 2024 general election. He took office on July 5, 2024, promising a government focused on public service, stability, and careful decision-making.
His administration initially aimed to rebuild trust after years of political turmoil. However, several policy reversals and controversial decisions quickly weakened public confidence.
Many Labour supporters also criticized Starmer’s leadership style. Critics described him as cautious, indecisive, and reluctant to take bold political positions.
Despite domestic criticism, Starmer received international praise for maintaining European support for Ukraine. He also took a firm stance against U.S. President Donald Trump over the Iran conflict and worked to strengthen relations with the European Union after Brexit.
During his resignation speech, Starmer highlighted several achievements. He pointed to shorter waiting lists in the National Health Service and other government reforms.
Still, voters remained frustrated over the economy, the rising cost of living, struggling public services, and other domestic challenges. His approval ratings continued to decline throughout his premiership.
Political pressure intensified after Labour rival Andy Burnham won a parliamentary by-election last week. Many party members viewed Burnham as a stronger candidate to restore Labour’s popularity.
Burnham has now emerged as the leading contender to replace Starmer as Labour leader and Britain’s next prime minister.
Starmer said he had accepted the party’s judgment.
“My party is asking whether I am still the right person to lead us into the next general election. I have heard their answer, and I accept that decision wholeheartedly,” he said.
He added that every decision he made had been in the best interest of the United Kingdom.
Before making the announcement, Starmer informed King Charles III of his decision during a meeting on Monday morning.
His resignation opens the door for Britain to appoint its seventh prime minister in just ten years. The rapid turnover highlights one of the most politically unstable periods in modern British history.
