Rupiah Strengthens to Rp17,748 per US Dollar on Thursday

Jakarta, ThedailyID — Indonesia’s rupiah extended its weakness on Monday afternoon, falling to Rp17,843 per US dollar as global dollar demand stayed elevated and risk sentiment remained fragile across emerging markets.

The move marks another pressured session for the local currency, which has been fluctuating within a weak range in recent weeks. Market participants point to persistent US dollar strength as the main driver, supported by expectations that US interest rates will remain higher for longer. This has kept capital flowing into safer assets and away from risk-sensitive currencies like the rupiah.

Traders also noted limited domestic support for the currency during the session. Although Bank Indonesia continues to intervene in the foreign exchange market and manage liquidity, external pressures have outweighed stabilisation efforts in the short term. Energy import needs and ongoing global uncertainty have added further weight to sentiment, keeping the rupiah under pressure.

Analysts say the rupiah’s trajectory is now highly sensitive to upcoming macroeconomic signals, especially from the United States. Any hawkish comments from the US Federal Reserve could strengthen the dollar further and widen pressure on Asian currencies. On the other hand, clearer signals of monetary easing could offer temporary relief.

Domestically, Indonesia’s economic fundamentals remain relatively stable, supported by controlled inflation and steady growth projections. However, markets are increasingly focused on external shocks rather than internal resilience. This mismatch often leads to short-term volatility even when local indicators remain solid.

Economists warn that prolonged weakness could have secondary effects, particularly on import-driven sectors. Higher import costs may gradually feed into production expenses and consumer prices if the trend persists. That could complicate inflation management in the coming months.

For now, the rupiah remains in a defensive position, with traders watching global sentiment more closely than domestic data. Market direction in the near term will likely hinge on US economic releases and broader risk appetite across financial markets.
