Jakarta, ThedailyID — A powerful earthquake centered near the Philippines damaged dozens of buildings in North Sulawesi, according to Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB).
Preliminary data showed that 27 homes and two churches sustained damage after the magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck waters near the southern Philippines on Monday morning.
BNPB said authorities continued assessing the impact as field teams collected reports from affected areas. Most of the damage occurred in several coastal communities across North Sulawesi.
The agency reported that the damaged buildings suffered varying levels of impact, ranging from minor cracks to structural damage. Officials have not reported any fatalities linked to the earthquake.
The quake triggered tsunami warnings across several countries in the region shortly after it struck. Indonesian authorities also issued alerts and urged coastal residents to remain vigilant until the threat subsided.
Local governments activated emergency response measures and monitored conditions in vulnerable areas. Officials also coordinated with disaster management agencies to assess potential risks and provide assistance where needed.
Indonesia sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world’s most active seismic zones. As a result, earthquakes frequently affect various parts of the archipelago.
Authorities urged residents to remain cautious of possible aftershocks and follow information from official government channels. Emergency teams continue monitoring developments while conducting damage assessments in affected communities.
BNPB said updates on the extent of the damage and recovery efforts will follow as verification teams complete inspections in the field.
