Jakarta, ThedailyID — Health experts reminded people with gout to pay closer attention to their diet during Eid al-Adha celebrations because high-purine foods may trigger rising uric acid levels and joint pain.
Doctors explained that gout occurs when uric acid crystals build up inside joints. The condition often causes swelling, redness, stiffness, and sudden pain, especially around the feet, ankles, knees, and fingers.
According to health experts, several foods may worsen gout symptoms when consumed excessively. Here are 10 foods people with gout should limit or avoid:
- White Bread and Pastries
Processed carbohydrates such as white bread, cakes, and pastries may worsen metabolic conditions linked to gout because they can rapidly increase blood sugar levels. - Honey
Honey contains high fructose levels. Experts explained that fructose releases purines when processed by the body. - Alcohol
Beer and alcoholic drinks remain major triggers because they contain purines and slow uric acid removal through urine. - Seafood
Shellfish, sardines, anchovies, tuna, oysters, shrimp, lobster, and crab contain high purine levels that may increase uric acid. - Organ Meats
Liver, tongue, and other organ meats contain very high purine content and may quickly worsen gout symptoms. - Red Meat
Beef, lamb, and pork may increase uric acid levels when consumed excessively during holiday meals. - Green Beans
Experts noted that green beans contain high fructose levels that may trigger gout flare-ups in some people. - Mushrooms
Mushrooms contain moderate to high purine levels, especially when consumed frequently in large portions. - Spinach
Spinach contains around 57 milligrams of purines per 100 grams, making it less suitable for gout patients. - Cauliflower
Cauliflower also contains purines, with around 23 milligrams per 100 grams.
Despite the restrictions, doctors emphasized that people with gout do not need to completely avoid all meat products forever.
Instead, experts recommended taking moderate portions, avoiding organ meats, reducing sugary drinks, and increasing water intake during Eid al-Adha gatherings.
Doctors also advised people not to consume qurban meat continuously for several days as the main meal.
By maintaining balanced eating habits and proper hydration, people with gout can still enjoy Eid al-Adha celebrations more comfortably without putting too much stress on their joints.
