Jakarta, ThedailyID — Indonesia recorded another major energy discovery after officials announced a new giant natural gas reserve containing trillions of cubic feet of gas.
According to CNBC Indonesia, the discovery came from an exploration project operated by Eni in the North Ganal Working Area, offshore East Kalimantan.
The company discovered the reserve through the Geng North-1 exploration well in the Kutei Basin.
Initial estimates showed the site contains around 5 trillion cubic feet (TCF) of gas in place, along with condensate resources.
Indonesia’s upstream oil and gas regulator SKK Migas described the finding as one of the country’s largest gas discoveries in recent years.
Officials said the reserve could strengthen Indonesia’s long-term energy supply and support future liquefied natural gas (LNG) production.
The discovery area sits near several existing gas developments operated by Eni in East Kalimantan waters.
Industry observers believe the location could accelerate future production because the infrastructure and supporting facilities already exist nearby.
SKK Migas also said the discovery reflects Indonesia’s continuing potential to attract upstream oil and gas investment despite global energy transition trends.
The government has recently pushed exploration activities to increase national energy security and reduce dependence on imports.
Indonesia remains one of Southeast Asia’s major natural gas producers and exporters, especially through LNG shipments to Asian markets.
Officials stated that further appraisal and technical studies will continue before moving into full development planning.
The discovery also raised optimism about additional untapped reserves in the Kutei Basin, which has long been considered one of Indonesia’s key hydrocarbon regions.
