Jakarta, ThedailyID — Mount Rinjani recorded a major spike in visitors during the long weekend holiday period, with more than 1,500 hikers climbing the mountain over the past few days.
Authorities from Mount Rinjani National Park said the total number of climbers reached 1,505 people. Most visitors came from different regions across Indonesia, while several international tourists also joined the hike.
The long weekend encouraged many travelers to choose outdoor destinations instead of urban tourism spots. As a result, hiking routes around Mount Rinjani became significantly busier than usual.
Officials explained that the Sembalun route remained the most popular access point because many climbers considered it more beginner-friendly and visually scenic. Meanwhile, the Senaru route also continued attracting experienced hikers seeking forest views and waterfall trails.
Mount Rinjani remains one of Indonesia’s most iconic mountains because of its crater lake, volcanic landscape, and panoramic sunrise views. Standing at more than 3,700 meters above sea level, the mountain attracts thousands of local and foreign tourists every year.
Due to the sharp increase in visitors, park authorities strengthened monitoring and deployed additional officers around climbing posts and rest areas. Officers also checked climbers’ registration data and reminded visitors to follow safety procedures during the trek.
In addition, authorities urged hikers to maintain cleanliness and avoid leaving trash inside the conservation area. Officials warned that increasing tourist activity could threaten the mountain ecosystem if visitors ignore environmental regulations.
Several climbers also shared photos and videos from the mountain on social media during the holiday weekend, further boosting interest in nature tourism among younger travelers.
Tourism officials believe the surge reflects the growing popularity of adventure tourism and outdoor activities in Indonesia, especially among Gen Z and millennial travelers looking for short “healing” trips during public holidays.
