Jakarta, ThedailyID — Three hikers died after an eruption at Mount Dukono triggered a deadly incident in North Maluku. Authorities said volcanic material and landslides buried the victims during the climb.
The eruption occurred while the group was hiking near the volcano area. Rescue teams later evacuated the victims after difficult search efforts around the eruption zone.
According to local authorities, the three victims were reportedly trapped by falling material and thick volcanic ash. In addition, unstable terrain complicated evacuation attempts during the rescue process.
Officials confirmed that all victims died at the location. Authorities also warned residents and visitors to stay away from restricted areas around the volcano due to ongoing volcanic activity.
Search and rescue officers, police personnel, and local volunteers joined the evacuation mission. However, dangerous conditions and limited visibility slowed the operation.
Meanwhile, Indonesia’s volcanology agency continues monitoring activity at Mount Dukono. The agency has repeatedly reminded the public not to approach the crater area because eruptions remain frequent.
Mount Dukono is one of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes. The volcano regularly releases ash columns and volcanic material, especially during periods of increased seismic activity.
Authorities are still investigating the full chronology of the incident. At the same time, officials urged hikers to follow safety instructions before entering active volcanic regions.
