Jakarta, ThedailyID — Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that several regions across Indonesia experienced unusually high temperatures during the first week of May 2026, with some areas recording temperatures above 37 degrees Celsius.
BMKG said the hot weather affected multiple provinces, especially areas entering the peak of the dry season transition.
According to the agency, the highest temperature reached 37.4 degrees Celsius in South Tangerang. Other regions also recorded extreme heat, including Ciputat at 37.2 degrees Celsius and Semarang at around 36 degrees Celsius.
BMKG explained that the rising temperatures mainly resulted from strong solar radiation and reduced cloud cover during the seasonal transition period.
The agency also noted that several regions currently experience clearer skies and lower rainfall intensity. Those conditions allow sunlight to heat the surface more intensely during the day.
In addition, BMKG stated that Indonesia is not currently experiencing a formal heatwave. The agency explained that true heatwaves usually occur in subtropical or mid-latitude regions and require temperatures to remain far above average for several consecutive days.
Even so, BMKG warned that the hot conditions could still affect public health and daily activities. Authorities urged people to stay hydrated, reduce outdoor activity during peak daytime hours, and use sun protection when necessary.
The agency also advised vulnerable groups, including children and older adults, to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.
Several residents across social media recently complained about unusually hot daytime temperatures in major cities. Many users described conditions as significantly hotter compared to previous months.
BMKG expects the dry season to expand gradually across more parts of Indonesia during May and June. As a result, several regions could continue experiencing high daytime temperatures in the coming weeks.
