Jakarta, ThedailyID — The United Nations has declared the Gaza Strip the most dangerous place in the world for journalists, citing a sharp rise in media worker deaths. The statement came from the UN Human Rights Office Palestine account on X on May 3.
“This is the most dangerous place in the world for journalists,” the office said.
Since October 2023, at least 295 journalists have been killed during the conflict, according to UN data. Most victims are local reporters. The UN has urged the international community to ensure accountability, protect journalists, and allow independent media access.
Volker Türk, the UN’s top human rights official, said the situation has turned Gaza into a “deadly trap” for media workers.
He added that journalism is becoming increasingly dangerous worldwide. He also noted that Lebanon has become the deadliest country for media workers so far in 2026.
Human rights groups have repeatedly accused Israel of targeting journalists, their families, and media offices to limit coverage.
At the same time, Israel restricts access for foreign independent media into Gaza and controls information flows from the territory.
Since the conflict began in October 2023, more than 75,000 people have been killed. Hundreds of thousands of homes have been destroyed, and millions have been displaced.
The UN warned that continued attacks on journalists threaten not only lives, but also access to verified information.
