Jakarta, ThedailyID — Indonesia coach John Herdman has introduced a new methodology for selecting national team players. The move signals a broader shift in how the Garuda squad will be built ahead of the 2026 ASEAN Championship and upcoming FIFA Matchday fixtures.
Speaking on April 28, Herdman said player selection will no longer rely mainly on reputation or short-term form. Instead, he is combining live scouting, performance data, tactical fit, and training evaluations to shape the squad.
The approach marks a departure from traditional call-up patterns. It also reflects Herdman’s preference for a more structured, evidence-based system.
Under the model, players will be assessed through multiple layers. Match performances remain important, but Herdman is also prioritizing decision-making, adaptability, physical metrics, and fit within specific tactical roles.
“We are not selecting only the best individual players, but the best players for the system,” Herdman said, according to local reports.
The new approach also includes longer-term monitoring. PSSI officials said Herdman and his staff have tracked players throughout the domestic season, rather than relying only on short pre-tournament camps.
That process helped shape the latest 23-player training squad announced for the May camp in Jakarta. Herdman stressed the list is not final. Performances in camp will determine who makes the tournament roster.
Analysts say the method resembles systems Herdman used with Canada. There he emphasized role clarity, squad culture, and tactical suitability alongside raw talent.
The shift comes as Indonesia seeks greater consistency after recent coaching changes. Herdman has framed the process as part of a longer-term rebuild, not preparation for a single tournament.
With regional and Asian competitions ahead, the methodology could shape who makes the squad. It may also influence how Indonesia develops its talent pipeline going forward.
