7 Ways to Stay Safe as Anak Krakatau Ash Reaches Jakarta

Jakarta, ThedailyID — Volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau has reached several areas of Jakarta after the volcano began erupting repeatedly on Friday night (04/09/2026).

Residents have reported ash covering houses, vehicles and outdoor areas across parts of the capital. Jakarta’s Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) has urged residents to remain alert but avoid panic.

BPBD Jakarta Executive Head Marulitua Sijabat outlined seven steps residents can take to reduce the impact of volcanic ash.

1. Wear a mask

Residents should wear a mask when going outside. According to BPBD Jakarta, ordinary cloth masks provide limited protection against fine volcanic ash particles.

Residents can use surgical or regular masks, while N95 masks offer stronger filtration. However, BPBD notes that N95 masks may not be suitable for children, pregnant women, older adults and people with certain heart or lung conditions because they can make breathing more difficult.

2. Close doors, windows and ventilation

Residents should close doors, windows and other openings when ash affects the surrounding air. They should also turn off fans or air conditioners that draw air from outside.

3. Reduce outdoor activities

Residents should limit activities outside, especially babies, children, older adults, pregnant women and people with asthma, lung disease or heart conditions.

4. Do not sweep dry ash

If volcanic ash settles around the house, residents should wet it before cleaning. Sweeping dry ash can send fine particles back into the air and increase the risk of inhalation.

5. Cover water and food

Residents should cover drinking-water containers and food supplies to prevent contamination. Water or food exposed to volcanic ash should not be consumed.

6. Seek medical care for severe symptoms

Residents who experience severe shortness of breath, chest pain, persistent coughing or worsening eye irritation should seek immediate medical attention at a healthcare facility.

7. Call the emergency service

Residents can contact the Jakarta Siaga emergency service at 112 to report emergencies in Jakarta.

Meanwhile, Marulitua urged residents not to spread unverified information about the eruption or ashfall. Updates on Mount Anak Krakatau and air conditions can be monitored through official channels from PVMBG, BMKG, BNPB, BPBD and the Jakarta Provincial Government.
