Jakarta, ThedailyID — The death toll from the collision between Argo Bromo Anggrek and a Commuter Line train in Bekasi rose to 14 people on Tuesday, April 28, while 84 people remained injured as rescue and recovery efforts continued.
The crash happened late Monday, April 27, near Bekasi Timur Station during busy evening rail operations. Initial reports showed fewer casualties, but the toll rose overnight as rescuers reached more victims inside damaged train cars.
Emergency crews worked through the night to evacuate passengers from the wreckage. Teams from Basarnas, police, and medical personnel joined the operation.
Authorities moved all victims who died to the National Police Hospital in Kramat Jati for identification.
Hospitals in Bekasi and Jakarta continued treating dozens of injured passengers Tuesday morning. Officials said some suffered serious trauma and fractures.
State rail operator KAI expressed condolences and said it would cover medical treatment and funeral costs through insurance support.
KAI also opened emergency posts and information services for families seeking updates on relatives.
The collision disrupted one of the busiest rail routes linking Jakarta and Bekasi. Authorities limited operations at Bekasi Timur Station and diverted several commuter services while crews cleared the tracks.
Investigators have started examining what caused the crash. Officials are reviewing signaling systems, traffic control procedures, and operational communication before the collision.
The accident drew national attention because the Argo Bromo Anggrek route serves as a major intercity line linking Jakarta and Surabaya, while the commuter line carries thousands of passengers daily.
Authorities have not released a final casualty count and warned the numbers could still change as recovery operations continue.
