What Happens When You Drink Black Tea Every Day? Here Are the Benefits

Jakarta, ThedailyID — Drinking black tea every day may offer several health benefits, especially when consumed without excessive added sugar.

Black tea contains polyphenols, including theaflavins, which form during the oxidation of tea leaves and have antioxidant properties. It also contains caffeine and L-theanine, which may support alertness and concentration.

According to UCLA Health, regular black tea consumption has been linked to heart health, blood sugar control, lower stroke risk and cognitive function.

However, black tea also contains caffeine. One cup typically provides around 50 to 90 milligrams, depending on the type and brewing method.

Potential Benefits of Black Tea

1. Supports heart health

Theaflavins and flavonoids in black tea have been linked to healthier cholesterol levels and cardiovascular risk factors. Some studies have also found an association between tea consumption and a lower risk of cardiovascular events.

2. May lower stroke risk

One study found that drinking at least two cups of tea daily was associated with a 16% lower risk of stroke compared with not drinking tea.

3. May improve focus

Black tea contains caffeine and L-theanine, which may work together to support alertness and concentration. Its caffeine content is generally lower than that of coffee.

4. May support blood sugar control

Unsweetened black tea may help lower blood glucose levels and support the body’s ability to manage blood sugar, including after meals.

5. May be linked to lower cancer risk

Researchers have studied tea polyphenols for their potential role in cancer prevention. However, more research is still needed to establish the benefits.

6. May be associated with lower mortality risk

One study found that people who drank at least two cups of tea daily had about a 13% lower risk of death from various causes than non-tea drinkers.

How Much Black Tea Is Safe?

Caffeine is the main factor to consider when drinking black tea regularly. A cup typically contains 50 to 90 milligrams of caffeine.

For healthy adults, total caffeine intake should generally stay below 400 milligrams per day. This includes caffeine from tea, coffee, energy drinks, food and certain medications.

Too much caffeine can cause anxiety, difficulty sleeping and increased tension. People who are sensitive to caffeine may therefore need to limit their intake.

Overall, black tea can fit into a healthy lifestyle when consumed in moderation. Choosing unsweetened tea can also help reduce excess sugar and calorie intake.

However, black tea should not replace a balanced diet, regular physical activity or routine health checks.
