US Bar Serves Cocktails with a Fake Doctor's Note to Skip Work

Jakarta, ThedailyID — A bar in Washington, D.C., is drawing attention with a signature cocktail served alongside a fake doctor’s note.

The Fountain Inn, located in Georgetown, pairs its Doctor’s Note cocktail with a mock medical certificate. The note is not genuine. Instead, it gives customers a humorous excuse for taking the day off after a night out.

The tropical cocktail blends rum, coconut, pineapple, and blue curaçao.

The concept goes beyond a simple gimmick. The Fountain Inn draws inspiration from America’s early drinking culture and historic taverns.

Its name honors Suter’s Tavern, which opened in 1783 and welcomed George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Pierre L’Enfant.

Today, the venue combines premium spirits with historical storytelling. Nearly every cocktail draws inspiration from classic recipes but features a modern twist.

“We take ideas from the past to inspire a modern cocktail approach in ways you probably won’t find elsewhere,” Bar Director Luke Georgiadis said.

Guests can also order historic drinks, including Fish House Punch, made with brandy, rum, and vermouth.

Another favorite is the Rebellious Old Fashioned, created to honor John Suter, the tavern’s original owner and a Madeira wine enthusiast.

The Fountain Inn also houses nearly 700 bottles of premium spirits, including rare Scotch whisky, vintage bourbon, and discontinued rye whiskey.

Its partnership with The Bourbon Concierge helps the bar source rare bottles from across the United States.

“We can source bottles from almost anywhere, giving us a unique opportunity to introduce new products,” Head Bartender Zack Atzert said.

Despite its extensive collection, the bar welcomes newcomers and experienced enthusiasts alike. It also offers affordable drinks and explains the history behind each cocktail.
