Jakarta, ThedailyID — Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan received a new international assignment from UEFA after U.S. authorities denied his entry for the 2026 FIFA Club World Cup.

FIFA selected Artan as one of the tournament officials. However, visa-related issues prevented him from traveling to the United States and taking part in the competition.

The setback ended his Club World Cup hopes despite months of preparation. Nevertheless, UEFA quickly offered another opportunity by appointing him to officiate matches in European competitions.

The move drew praise from football observers, who viewed it as recognition of Artan’s professionalism and commitment to the sport.

Although Artan missed one of FIFA’s biggest club tournaments, the UEFA appointment keeps him active on the international stage and maintains his career momentum.

Meanwhile, the incident renewed discussions about travel restrictions facing sports officials from certain countries. Critics argued that visa barriers can undermine the inclusiveness of global sporting events.

FIFA has not indicated whether it will assign Artan to another major tournament later in the current cycle.

Artan has established himself as one of Somalia’s leading referees. He regularly oversees matches organized by FIFA and the Confederation of African Football.

Moreover, the UEFA appointment marks an important step in his career and highlights the organization’s support following his exclusion from the Club World Cup.
