Jakarta, ThedailyID — US President Donald Trump has said he is no longer interested in reaching a deal with Iran, as reports emerge that Washington is preparing for the possibility of renewed military strikes against Tehran.
“I don’t think a deal is something I really want to do, but they are willing to offer us anything to stop it,” Trump said during a Republican Party campaign event in San Antonio on Wednesday, October 7.
His remarks came after reports that Trump and his national security team had discussed resuming military operations against Iran. According to Axios, the Pentagon had instructed US Central Command, which oversees military operations in the Middle East, to complete preparations for potential major combat operations.
The Atlantic also reported that Trump was considering new strikes before the US midterm elections in early November. Potential targets reportedly include Iran’s energy facilities, infrastructure, and nuclear sites.
A renewed conflict could also have political and economic consequences for Washington. Axios warned that a return to fighting within the next three to four weeks could affect the midterm elections, particularly if oil prices rise in response to escalating tensions.
However, Trump later said the United States would not launch new attacks on Iran before the November 3 midterm elections. He cited ongoing discussions with Tehran, although the possibility of further military action remains a concern.
Trump’s approval rating has also fallen to a record low, according to the report provided by CNN. A renewed military campaign could therefore add pressure on his administration ahead of the elections.
The latest developments highlight the uncertainty surrounding US policy toward Iran, as Washington weighs diplomatic options against preparations for possible military escalation.
