Jakarta, ThedailyID — Salt is a common ingredient in food and drinks. However, consuming too much can increase the risk of several health problems.
Salt contains about 40 percent sodium and 60 percent chloride. Both minerals support important body functions, including muscle and nerve activity and fluid balance.
Indonesia’s Ministry of Health recommends limiting daily salt intake to 5 grams, or about one teaspoon. This is equivalent to no more than 2,000 milligrams of sodium per day.
So why should salt intake be limited?
Excessive salt consumption can contribute to several noncommunicable diseases, including hypertension. Research has also linked high-salt diets to a higher risk of stomach cancer.
The effects may also appear through several warning signs. Recognizing them can help people become more aware of their salt intake.
1. Swelling
Eating too much salt can cause the body to retain water. This excess fluid can build up in tissues, leading to swelling and bloating.
2. Frequent headaches
Excess sodium can disrupt the body’s fluid balance. This may contribute to dehydration and trigger headaches.
3. Extreme thirst
High salt intake can make the mouth feel dry and increase thirst. This happens as the body tries to restore its fluid balance.
4. Frequent urination
Changes in fluid balance can also cause some people to urinate more often.
5. Craving salty foods
Regularly eating salty foods can make people accustomed to their taste. As a result, they may continue craving foods with high salt content.
Keeping salt intake within the recommended limit is one way to support overall health. People should also pay attention to hidden sodium in processed foods, snacks and beverages.
