Jakarta, ThedailyID — Thousands of people gathered at Jakarta’s National Monument (Monas) on Saturday, August 1, to attend the National Zikir and Prayer Gathering, held as part of Indonesia’s preparations for Independence Month.

Many participants arrived wearing white clothing. Groups traveled from various regions, including Tasikmalaya in West Java, with several arriving by bus.

“We’re still waiting for the rest of our group,” one participant told Antara while standing near the entrance gate.

After entering the venue, organizers separated attendees into male and female lines for security screening and souvenir distribution.

Participants received prayer items from the Presidential Palace, including prayer mats. Women also received mukena, while men were given sarongs.

Many attendees then spread their prayer mats around the main stage before the event began.

The Ministry of Religious Affairs estimated that around 100,000 people would attend the gathering. The event remains open to the public and is scheduled to run until 9:30 p.m. local time.

Organizers opened the venue to participants at 3:00 p.m. through security checkpoints on the northern and southern sides of Monas. Those unable to enter the main area can still follow the event through large LED screens installed outside.

The event also provides supporting facilities, including medical services. Baznas has distributed 100,000 bottles of drinking water and 100,000 bread rolls, while 75 volunteers are on site to help keep the area clean.
