Jakarta, ThedailyID — Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered emergency response measures after severe storms and flooding struck several parts of the country, leaving at least 10 people dead and forcing tens of thousands to evacuate.
Xi issued the directive on July 7, calling on authorities to intensify rescue operations, assist the injured, relocate affected residents, and strengthen disaster prevention efforts.
He stressed the need to make every effort to organize emergency rescue operations, provide medical treatment for victims, and ensure the safe evacuation of people in disaster-hit areas, according to state broadcaster CCTV.
The worst impacts were reported in Hubei Province, where severe convective weather swept through several cities on July 6. State media reported thunderstorms, powerful winds, and tornadoes in areas including Huangshi and Huanggang.
According to state news agency Xinhua, extreme weather injured 275 people in Huangzhou District, Huanggang, although authorities have not disclosed the severity of the injuries.
Meanwhile, rescue teams continue emergency operations as local governments assess damage across the affected regions.
In southern China, heavy rainfall and flooding triggered by Typhoon Maysak killed at least two people in Guangxi. Authorities also evacuated more than 48,000 residents by Monday night as floodwaters rose.
China experiences frequent flooding during the summer monsoon season. However, meteorologists have warned that increasingly extreme weather events are becoming more common as climate patterns continue to change.
