Jakarta, ThedailyID — Indonesia’s rupiah weakened against the US dollar on Monday, July 13, as investors weighed domestic economic prospects alongside persistent global market uncertainty.

By 12:01 p.m. WIB, the rupiah traded at Rp18,145 per US dollar, down 0.44% from the previous trading session.

The currency had strengthened to Rp18,065 per US dollar at the close on Friday, July 10. However, Monday’s decline suggested that pressure on the rupiah remains.

Currency and commodities analyst Ibrahim Assuaibi said domestic economic sentiment continued to influence the rupiah’s performance.

Investors are closely monitoring Indonesia’s medium-term growth outlook. Meanwhile, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) maintained its forecast of 5.2% economic growth for both 2026 and 2027.

The lender left its projection unchanged from its April outlook. However, the forecast remains below the government’s 5.4% growth target set in the 2026 state budget.

Global factors also weighed on the rupiah. Rising crude oil prices have fueled concerns about higher energy-driven inflation worldwide.

As a result, markets expect the US Federal Reserve to keep monetary policy tight for longer. That outlook continues to support demand for US dollar-denominated assets.

Looking ahead, Ibrahim expects the rupiah to remain volatile in the short term. Investors will continue monitoring global economic developments and future US interest rate decisions.

If external pressures persist, the rupiah could remain under pressure. Nevertheless, Indonesia’s domestic economic stability will remain crucial for maintaining investor confidence.

Businesses and investors are also watching exchange rate movements closely, as they can affect import costs, inflation, and overall economic activity.
