Jakarta, ThedailyID — Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto tested The Nusantara Explorer, a new luxury sleeper train developed by state railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI), on Thursday, July 30.
Prabowo travelled from Semarang Tawang Station to Batang in Central Java before attending the launch of a nationwide subsidised housing programme.
Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya said the train reflects Prabowo’s vision of providing passengers with railway services that are elegant, comfortable, and visually appealing.
After arriving in Batang, the president is scheduled to inaugurate the signing of 62,000 subsidised home mortgage agreements. The programme is taking place simultaneously at 165 locations across 372 cities and regencies in 36 provinces, with the main ceremony held in Batang.
According to KAI, The Nusantara Explorer was designed and modified by the company’s engineers at the Balai Yasa Surabaya Gubeng maintenance facility.
The train features three types of sleeper cabins: Signature Class, Advanced Class, and Compact Class. KAI said the service combines private resting spaces with dining, entertainment, and panoramic travel experiences.
The train also includes a Grand Restaurant and a Lounge equipped with reclining seating, a bar, entertainment facilities, a piano, an audio system, and large windows for sightseeing.
KAI President Director Bobby Rasyidin said the project demonstrates the company’s ability to develop modern railway services using its own technical expertise.
“The Nusantara Explorer reflects the capabilities of KAI’s workforce and the engineering expertise that continues to grow at Balai Yasa Surabaya Gubeng,” Bobby said.
