Jakarta, ThedailyID — Indonesian police have charged a 15-year-old student in Nabire, Central Papua, with premeditated murder over the death of his 14-year-old female classmate after investigators alleged he planned the attack out of fear that details of their past relationship would be revealed.
Deputy Nabire Police Chief Piter Kendek said the two students dated briefly in May 2026 and had previously engaged in consensual sexual activity.
“The victim threatened to tell the suspect’s parents that they had been sexually involved,” Piter said.
Police said the relationship ended in June 2026 after the suspect became close to another girl. Investigators allege the victim later threatened to disclose their relationship to his family, prompting him to plan the killing.
According to police, the suspect contacted the victim and arranged a final meeting before carrying out the attack.
Officers arrested the suspect less than 24 hours after discovering the victim’s body on July 30, 2026, following an investigation that included CCTV footage, fingerprint identification, and witness statements.
“We arrested the suspect in less than 24 hours,” Piter said. “The evidence indicates there was an element of planning.”
Police charged the teenager under Indonesia’s premeditated murder law. Because he is a minor, the case will proceed under the country’s juvenile justice system.
Separately, SMP Negeri 1 Nabire said it had withdrawn the student from school after police named him a suspect.
Vice Principal Theresia Maker said the decision followed school regulations for students facing criminal proceedings.
The Nabire Education Office said it would leave the legal process to law enforcement while urging schools, parents, and communities to strengthen student supervision to help prevent similar incidents.
