Jakarta, ThedailyID — Haze from forest and land fires in South Sumatra continued to blanket Palembang on Monday (24/08), although visibility improved compared with the previous day.
Thick smoke remained visible along Soekarno Hatta Road and several areas in central Palembang. Haze was also still seen above the Ampera Bridge, but it was less dense than on Sunday morning.
Local resident Iqbal, 20, said the haze had decreased but remained visible. He continued wearing a mask to protect his health.
“It was quite thick yesterday, like the videos on social media. Today, the haze has decreased, and hopefully it will disappear soon,” Iqbal said, as cited by Detiksumbagsel, Monday (24/08).
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) said Palembang’s air quality had reached an unhealthy level due to haze from fires across South Sumatra.
BMKG data showed PM2.5 concentrations at the Musi 2 monitoring station reached 69.5 micrograms per cubic meter. The agency classified the reading as unhealthy.
BMKG urged residents to limit outdoor activities, especially those with respiratory conditions. People who must go outside were advised to wear masks and protective eyewear.
Meanwhile, Palembang Mayor Ratu Dewa distributed 16,000 free masks to residents and motorists. Authorities planned to distribute the masks at several traffic lights and district offices across the city.
The Palembang Search and Rescue Office also warned boat operators about reduced visibility on the Musi River. Authorities advised operators to reduce speed, use navigation lights and check safety equipment.
“Safety is the top priority. Do not force a voyage when visibility is limited by haze. Prioritize the safety of yourself, passengers and the entire crew,” Palembang SAR chief Raymond Konstantin said, Monday (24/08).
President Prabowo Subianto also held a meeting in Palembang on Monday to discuss the response to forest and land fires.
