Jakarta, ThedailyID — An illegal dumping site near Pasar Minggu Station in South Jakarta has triggered complaints from residents after piles of garbage overflowed onto a nearby road and produced a strong foul odor.
The dump sits on the southern side of the station, about 20 meters from the station’s parking area and a railway crossing. Waste has accumulated beside the railway tracks and spread onto Tanjung Barat arterial road, narrowing traffic lanes.
Residents said the smell can be detected from as far as 50 meters away. The odor becomes stronger when trains pass through the area or when the wind blows toward nearby neighborhoods.
Despite the growing pile of waste, people continued to dump rubbish at the site. Many arrived on motorcycles carrying plastic bags before discarding them onto the existing heap.
The area has also become more congested because street vendors and handcarts occupy part of the road.
Residents Frustrated by Persistent Waste
Titin, head of Neighborhood Unit (RT) 02/RW 008, said the illegal dump has become a major nuisance for local residents.
“We’re very disturbed, especially because it’s getting bigger. The road keeps getting narrower,” Titin said.
She said sanitation trucks collect the garbage every day, but the waste quickly returns because people continue dumping rubbish around the clock.
“The Environmental Agency sends trucks every day, and excavators also clear the site. But once they leave, people keep dumping garbage there 24 hours a day,” she said.
Originally Intended for Local Residents
According to Titin, the site originally served as a temporary collection point for residents of RW 08. However, people from other neighborhoods now regularly dispose of their waste there.
She said many of those dumping rubbish appear to come from nearby areas, including Condet, Kampung Jawa, and several neighboring communities.
Residents have urged authorities to find a long-term solution to stop illegal dumping and restore cleanliness around the station.
