Jakarta, ThedailyID — The death toll from devastating floods and landslides in Nepal and China has risen to 750, while more than 3,000 people remain missing.
Nepal reported 734 deaths as of Sunday (30/8), up from 670 previously. Authorities also said 2,498 people remain missing, including hundreds of foreign nationals.
In China, authorities confirmed at least 16 deaths in Tibet. Another 546 people remain missing, including 261 foreign nationals and 18 US citizens.
The disaster struck Nepal and areas along the China border on Wednesday (26/8). Initial reports linked the disaster to an earthquake that allegedly triggered ice and rock avalanches into the Lhende Khola River.
However, further analysis by the US Geological Survey (USGS) found no evidence of an earthquake before the landslides and flash floods occurred.
Search and rescue teams continue working across the affected areas as authorities try to locate thousands of people who remain unaccounted for.
