Morning Coffee Without Breakfast Could Affect Digestion and Energy Levels

Jakarta, ThedailyID — Drinking coffee before breakfast remains a common morning habit for many people. However, doctors warned that consuming coffee on an empty stomach may trigger several health risks, especially when done regularly.

According to medical experts, coffee can increase stomach acid production shortly after consumption. As a result, some people may experience bloating, nausea, stomach pain, or acid reflux after drinking coffee without eating first.

Doctors explained that caffeine also stimulates cortisol production, which is often called the stress hormone. Therefore, drinking coffee immediately after waking up may increase feelings of anxiety, restlessness, or energy crashes in certain individuals.

Meanwhile, people with sensitive digestion or gastric issues may face stronger effects from the habit. Experts said coffee on an empty stomach could irritate the digestive system and worsen symptoms related to gastritis or acid reflux.

Despite the risks, doctors noted that not everyone experiences the same reaction after drinking coffee before breakfast. Some people can tolerate caffeine well, especially if they already consume coffee regularly every day.

However, experts still recommend eating light meals or snacks before drinking coffee in the morning. Foods containing protein, fiber, or carbohydrates may help reduce irritation in the stomach and stabilize energy levels throughout the day.

In addition, doctors advised people not to rely only on coffee as their morning energy source. Lack of proper nutrition during breakfast may eventually affect concentration, metabolism, and overall body performance.

Health experts also reminded the public to monitor their caffeine intake daily. Excessive coffee consumption may lead to sleep problems, increased heart rate, dehydration, and digestive discomfort.

Coffee itself still offers several health benefits when consumed in balanced amounts. Studies have linked moderate coffee consumption to improved focus, mood, and antioxidant intake.

Therefore, doctors encouraged people to maintain healthier coffee habits instead of avoiding coffee completely. Eating breakfast before drinking coffee and limiting caffeine intake may help reduce potential health risks in the long term.
