Jakarta, ThedailyID — Fans of the first-generation PlayStation can now revisit the classic console in LEGO form. The LEGO PlayStation set, made up of 1,911 pieces, went on sale Thursday, October 1.
The set comes from a collaboration between Sony Interactive Entertainment and the LEGO Group. It recreates the original PlayStation console and its controller at nearly 1:1 scale.
Once assembled, the console measures about 26 centimeters wide. The set also includes details inspired by PlayStation’s early history.
Two iconic games, Ape Escape and Gran Turismo, appear as separate dioramas. The Gran Turismo display features a miniature racing track and small cars.
Meanwhile, the Ape Escape diorama recreates an island scene. Its monkey character also features a helmet with switchable blue and red lighting.
Both dioramas can be removed from the main set. Fans can also adjust elements while assembling or displaying the collection.
SIE Senior Director of Licensed Merchandise Steffi Steffen said the collaboration celebrates more than three decades of PlayStation and its gaming community.
“For the first time, players and LEGO fans can build a LEGO replica of the original PlayStation console and controller,” Steffen wrote on the official PlayStation website on September 3.
The replica also includes several mechanical features. Builders can operate the Power and Open buttons, while the controller can connect to the console.
Despite its detailed design, the LEGO PlayStation does not function as a gaming console. It is designed as a buildable replica and display piece.
Sales began October 1 through direct.playstation.com in the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain and Portugal.
The set also became available through LEGO Insiders early access on the same day. General sales through LEGO.com and LEGO Stores will begin October 4.
The recommended retail price starts at US$179.99, €159.99, £139.99 or ¥27,980, depending on the market. Sony and LEGO have not announced the Indonesian price or availability.
Steffen said the set is intended for both longtime PlayStation fans and newer collectors who want to revisit the console’s early history.
