Magnitude 4.7 Aftershock Hits Sigi as Quake Sequence Continues

Jakarta, ThedailyID — A magnitude 4.7 earthquake struck Sigi, Central Sulawesi, on Thursday evening as aftershocks continued following the powerful magnitude 6.7 earthquake that hit the region earlier this week.

Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the earthquake occurred at 8:39 p.m. WIB.

The epicenter was located 56 kilometers northeast of Sigi at coordinates 1.14° South and 120.22° East, with a shallow depth of 5 kilometers.

According to BMKG Regional Office IV Head Nasrol Adil, the earthquake resulted from activity along the Sausu Fault, making it a shallow tectonic earthquake.

Meanwhile, residents in Palu and Sigi felt the tremor at Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) III, indicating light shaking that was noticeable indoors.

Furthermore, BMKG confirmed the earthquake was part of the aftershock sequence from the magnitude 6.7 earthquake that struck Sigi on June 16 at 10:27 a.m. WIB.

As of 8:40 p.m. WIB on June 18, BMKG had recorded 804 aftershocks, with the strongest reaching magnitude 5.3.

Authorities continue to monitor seismic activity and have urged residents to remain alert while following official updates from BMKG.
