Jakarta, ThedailyID — Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has called on young people to take an active role in protecting and improving the capital as the city prepares to celebrate its 500th anniversary on June 22, 2027. He said youth participation is essential to building an inclusive, safe and sustainable Jakarta.

Pramono delivered the message at the Jakarta Youth Aspirations Workshop, Kawula17 Goes to School 2026, at Jakarta City Hall on Monday, October 26. The event brought together 120 students from 15 senior high schools and vocational schools across the capital.

Participants shared their views on urban challenges, including environmental issues. Pramono encouraged the students to turn their ideas into positive changes in their schools and communities.

“As the future leaders of this nation, you are responsible for caring for and protecting the city. I am confident that under the leadership of young people like Angelika and all of you, Jakarta will be in better hands,” Pramono said in a written statement released on Tuesday, October 27.

He also expressed hope that the workshop would support the students’ personal development. Beyond the event, he wants young people to contribute directly to their communities and the country.

Maria Angelica Christy, co-founder and program manager of Kawula17, emphasized the importance of involving young people in decisions that shape Jakarta. She said environmental issues deserve particular attention because today’s choices will affect future generations.

“The condition of our water, air, green spaces and energy that we decide on today will determine our quality of life decades from now. In other words, Jakarta’s environmental issues are also issues for Jakarta’s young people,” Maria said.

She linked youth participation to Indonesia’s Youth Pledge Day, which falls on October 28. Maria argued that young people who speak up about urban challenges can help shape the city’s development and future priorities.

Kawula17 believes Jakarta can become more inclusive, safe and sustainable when authorities listen to residents, particularly younger generations. Maria said the journey toward the city’s 500th anniversary should involve people from all backgrounds.

“We believe an inclusive, safe and sustainable Jakarta can grow from a willingness to listen to one another, especially to young people. The journey toward Jakarta’s five centuries should therefore involve all its residents, particularly the young,” she said.

With the anniversary approaching in 2027, the workshop provided a platform for students to express their concerns and ideas. The event also highlighted the role young residents can play in discussions about the capital’s environmental conditions and long-term development.
