Jakarta, ThedailyID — An Indonesian peacekeeping soldier was killed after a projectile struck a United Nations base in southern Lebanon, amid escalating conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.

The soldier was part of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). The attack hit a guard post near Adchit al Qusayr. The incident also left another Indonesian soldier critically injured.

The United Nations said it is still investigating the origin of the projectile. Officials stressed that peacekeeping missions should not result in casualties.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres strongly condemned the incident. He also expressed condolences to Indonesia over the loss.

“This should not happen in a peacekeeping mission,” the UN said in its statement.

The attack comes as tensions rise between Israel Defense Forces and Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently ordered an expansion of military operations in the region.

The move has intensified cross-border attacks and increased risks for personnel stationed in conflict zones.

UNIFIL troops operate in southern Lebanon to monitor hostilities and maintain stability along the border. However, the worsening situation has raised concerns over their safety.

Analysts warn that continued escalation could further endanger international peacekeepers and deepen the humanitarian crisis in the region.
