Jakarta, ThedailyID — Minister of Culture Fadli Zon has designated July 13 as the Day of Belief in One Supreme God. He said the decision fulfills constitutional and legal responsibilities to protect Indonesia’s cultural diversity.
Fadli cited Article 32 paragraph (1) of the 1945 Constitution. The article requires the state to advance national culture while protecting people’s right to preserve and develop their cultural values.
He also referred to Law No. 5 of 2017 on Cultural Advancement as another legal basis for the designation.
“The Day of Belief in One Supreme God reminds us that Indonesia stands on diversity, tolerance, and respect for every citizen,” Fadli said during an event with the Supreme Council of Indonesian Belief Organizations (MLKI) at Taman Mini Indonesia Indah on July 6.
He said the government will continue to protect the rights of followers of indigenous beliefs. It will also support them in preserving traditions and passing cultural values to future generations.
Fadli said July 13 carries historical significance. On that date in 1945, the Investigating Committee for Preparatory Work for Independence (BPUPKI) discussed Indonesia’s constitutional framework.
He added that the government has not decided whether July 13 will become a national public holiday.
Instead, he described the designation as formal recognition of followers of indigenous beliefs. He also said the decision reflects a long-standing proposal from MLKI.
Director General for Cultural Protection and Tradition Restu Gunawan said MLKI first proposed the commemorative day in 2005.
He explained that representatives of indigenous belief communities and MLKI organizations took part in the discussions. The Directorate of Belief in One Supreme God and Indigenous Communities coordinated the process.
