Jakarta, ThedailyID — Indonesia is considering reducing its contribution to United Nations peacekeeping missions following recent casualties involving its troops in Lebanon.
The Indonesian Military (TNI) said it is reviewing its deployment under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). The move comes after several Indonesian peacekeepers were killed in an attack on a UN post in southern Lebanon.
TNI Commander Agus Subiyanto said the military is evaluating risks faced by personnel in conflict zones.
“We must prioritize the safety of our soldiers while continuing to support global peace efforts,” he said.
Indonesia remains one of the largest contributors to UN peacekeeping missions. The country has deployed thousands of troops to various regions, including the Middle East and Africa.
However, the recent incident has raised concerns over the security of peacekeeping forces. The attack occurred amid escalating tensions between Israeli forces and Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.
Meanwhile, the United Nations has launched an investigation into the incident. Officials are working to determine the source of the strike that hit the UNIFIL base.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the attack. He stressed that all parties must respect the safety and neutrality of peacekeeping forces.
At the same time, Indonesian authorities emphasized that no final decision has been made. The government continues to assess the situation before taking further steps.
Furthermore, analysts say any reduction in Indonesian troops could impact UN peacekeeping operations. Indonesia has long played a key role in maintaining stability in conflict-affected regions.
Overall, the review reflects growing concerns over the risks faced by peacekeepers. It also highlights the challenges of operating in increasingly volatile environments.
