Hukumonline Marks 26th Anniversary with Free AI Legal Access for Nonprofits

Jakarta, ThedailyID — Hukumonline celebrated its 26th anniversary by expanding access to legal technology through AIlex for Good, a program that provides free AI-powered legal research tools to nonprofit organizations across Indonesia.

The initiative aims to narrow the country’s legal knowledge gap, which continues to limit access to justice for many Indonesians.

Research by the Ministry of National Development Planning (Bappenas) and the Faculty of Law at the University of Indonesia found that about 53% of people seeking justice do not know they are entitled to free legal aid.

Hukumonline said that finding inspired its mission to make legal knowledge more accessible through technology.

Over the past few years, the company has developed AIlex, a conversational AI legal research assistant that now serves more than 3,500 monthly users.

To broaden its impact, Hukumonline launched AIlex for Good, which offers one year of free access to legal aid organizations, universities, research institutions, civil society groups, and bar associations.

The program has already reached 43 organizations, and Hukumonline plans to expand the initiative further.

As part of the program, Hukumonline also partnered with the Jakarta Archdiocese Cathedral Parish, providing one year of complimentary AIlex access to support legal aid and advocacy services.

Chief Executive Officer Arkka Dhiratara said technology should strengthen the entire legal ecosystem instead of benefiting only well-funded organizations.

“For 26 years, Hukumonline has believed that access to quality legal information is the foundation of justice,” Arkka said.

He added that AI should help lawyers, academics, and civil society organizations work faster and more accurately while expanding their social impact.

Hukumonline also introduced new AIlex features, including Tanya Putusan, which helps users search, summarize, and analyze court decisions within seconds.

Another feature, Internal Policy Review, allows companies to review internal policies, generate document summaries, receive regulatory recommendations, and interact with documents through an AI-powered chat interface.

Arkka emphasized that AIlex relies on Hukumonline’s legal database, which the company has built and curated for more than two decades.

He also stressed that AI supports legal professionals rather than replacing them.

“AI does not replace lawyers, judges, academics, or legal counsel. It helps them work more productively so they can focus on analysis, strategy, and decision-making,” he said.

One of AIlex for Good’s partners, the Indonesian Forum for the Environment (WALHI), said the platform has improved legal research and environmental advocacy by reducing the time needed to search legal documents.

WALHI Executive Director Boy Jerry Even Sembiring said the collaboration demonstrates how technology can strengthen environmental justice and promote human rights alongside economic development
