Google Celebrates Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day With Traditional Weaving Doodle

Jakarta, ThedailyID — Google marked Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day on Monday, Aug. 17, with a special Doodle inspired by the country’s traditional weaving heritage.

Instead of featuring a flag, ceremony or traditional Independence Day games, Google transformed its logo into a woven textile design in red, white and gold.

The letters spelling “Google” appear integrated into a piece of fabric stretched across a traditional loom. Various patterns cover the textile, while its ends remain attached to wooden supports.

According to Google’s official Doodles page, the artwork was created to celebrate Indonesia’s Independence Day. Indonesian artist Anindya Anugrah created the illustration.

Google categorized the artwork under National Days/Independence Days. The company chose weaving to highlight Indonesia’s traditional textile art and its connection to the country’s cultural heritage and identity.

Why Did Google Choose Weaving?

The choice gives this year’s Independence Day celebration a different cultural focus. Rather than highlighting one specific regional tradition, Google presents weaving as a broader representation of Indonesia’s diverse textile heritage.

The red and white colors connect the artwork to Indonesia’s Independence Day. Meanwhile, the various patterns reflect the country’s rich traditions and cultural diversity.

Weaving itself involves arranging threads systematically to create a piece of fabric. Visually, this process can also evoke an image of different elements coming together as one.

Google, however, has not stated that this interpretation represents the official meaning behind the 2026 Doodle.

Google regularly changes its logo to commemorate major events, cultural traditions, historical figures and achievements around the world. These special designs are known as Google Doodles.

The first Google Doodle appeared in 1998. Since then, the concept has expanded from simple logo changes into illustrations, animations and interactive experiences.

For Indonesia, this is not the first time Google has highlighted local culture through a Doodle. In 2025, Google featured Pacu Jalur, a traditional boat racing event from Riau, for Indonesia’s Independence Day.

Google Indonesia first created a Doodle specifically commemorating Indonesia’s Independence Day in 2012.
