Indonesia then faced Malaysia in their second group-stage game. The match ended 0-0 after Thom Haye received a red card in the 36th minute.

The red card forced Indonesia to spend much of the match defending. Despite heavy pressure from Malaysia, the Garuda squad held on for a goalless draw.

The result kept Indonesia’s hopes alive heading into the final group match against Bangladesh. Indonesia and Malaysia both needed a strong goal difference to fight for the top spot.

Indonesia eventually produced a huge 9-2 victory over Bangladesh. The result left Indonesia and Malaysia level on a +9 goal difference.

Indonesia advanced as group winners after scoring 11 goals in total, compared with Malaysia’s nine. The result sent the Garuda squad into the final against Thailand.

Thailand presented another major challenge for Indonesia. The Southeast Asian side had often ended Indonesia’s hopes at the final stage of previous competitions.

The final remained tight until the closing stages. Dean James put Indonesia ahead in the 84th minute, but Thailand equalized through Iklas Sanron just three minutes later.

Thailand then turned the match around in extra time. Peeradon Chamratsamee scored in the 111th minute with a low shot that Emil Audero could not stop.

Indonesia refused to give up. Elkan Baggott equalized late in extra time after converting Rizky Ridho’s assist.

The match then went to a penalty shootout. Kevin Diks, Dean James, Elkan Baggott and Shayne Pattynama all converted their penalties for Indonesia.

Thailand missed twice. Sarach Yooyen hit the post, while Emil Audero saved Nattapong Sayriya’s effort.

The saves proved decisive. Indonesia completed a dramatic run from the group stage to the final and lifted the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 trophy.
