Jakarta, ThedailyID — Fans will be allowed to display Palestinian flags inside stadiums during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to tournament regulations that permit the flags of FIFA member associations.
Palestine has been an official member of FIFA since 1998. As a result, supporters can bring and wave Palestinian flags throughout matches at the tournament, which will take place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The decision has drawn significant attention amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East and growing international solidarity campaigns supporting Palestinians. Many fans have questioned whether FIFA would impose restrictions on Palestinian symbols during the tournament.
However, FIFA’s current rules generally allow supporters to display the flags of recognized member associations, provided they do not violate stadium safety regulations or promote discrimination, violence, or political incitement.
Palestine’s national team competes in FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). The team has participated in several major international competitions, including the AFC Asian Cup.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the largest edition in the tournament’s history. FIFA has expanded the competition from 32 to 48 teams, increasing the number of matches from 64 to 104.
The tournament will begin on June 11, 2026, with matches spread across 16 host cities in North America. The final is scheduled to take place at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 19.
The issue of flags and political symbols has become increasingly prominent at major sporting events in recent years. During previous international tournaments, organizers often faced debates over national symbols linked to geopolitical conflicts.
For now, FIFA’s regulations indicate that Palestinian flags will remain permitted inside World Cup venues as long as fans follow tournament rules and security guidelines.
