Etomidate in Illegal Vapes: Health Risks Behind the Dangerous Trend

Jakarta, ThedailyID — Health authorities are warning about the dangers of etomidate, an intravenous anaesthetic that has recently been found in illegal vape cartridges.

The issue has drawn attention after Singapore tightened enforcement against illicit vape products containing etomidate. The country now treats the misuse of such products as a serious drug-related offence.

In Indonesia, etomidate is classified as a Category II narcotic. The National Narcotics Agency (BNN) has previously seized thousands of refill vape cartridges containing the substance.

Etomidate is a prescription anaesthetic used by medical professionals before surgery and emergency procedures. It acts quickly by inducing unconsciousness and is commonly chosen for patients who may not tolerate significant drops in blood pressure.

Medical experts stress that etomidate should only be administered under strict clinical supervision.

When inhaled through modified vape devices, however, the drug can pose serious health risks.

Potential health risks

Experts warn that inhaling etomidate may lead to:

  • Suppressed cortisol production, which can disrupt hormone function
  • Sudden sedation or loss of consciousness
  • Dependence because of its sedative effects
  • Long-term damage to vital organs, including the liver and kidneys

The risks increase when the substance is used without medical supervision or mixed into unregulated vape liquids.

Health authorities continue to urge the public to avoid illegal vaping products, particularly those with unknown ingredients, as they may contain controlled substances that can cause severe health complications.
