Diabetes Can Increase Cataract Risk Faster Than Expected

Jakarta, ThedailyID — Doctors warned that Diabetes can accelerate the appearance of cataracts due to prolonged high blood sugar levels that affect the eyes.

Medical experts explained that excessive glucose in the blood can damage the eye lens over time and cause it to become cloudy more quickly.

The condition increases the risk of cataracts appearing at a younger age compared to people without diabetes.

Doctors also noted that unstable blood sugar levels may trigger swelling in the eye lens, leading to blurred vision and worsening eye health.

Besides cataracts, diabetes can also increase the risk of other eye complications, including diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma.

Health experts advised people with diabetes to routinely monitor blood sugar levels and undergo regular eye examinations to detect problems early.

Maintaining a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and following prescribed treatment plans can also help reduce the risk of eye damage linked to diabetes.

Cataracts occur when the normally clear lens of the eye becomes cloudy, making vision blurry and reducing the ability to see clearly.

The condition commonly develops with age, but diabetes can speed up the process significantly if patients do not properly control blood sugar levels.

Doctors urged the public not to ignore early symptoms such as blurry vision, sensitivity to light, or difficulty seeing at night.
