Jakarta, ThedailyID — Indonesia’s National Cyber and Crypto Agency (BSSN) has warned that cybercriminals can use modified charging cables to hack smartphones and laptops.
The agency said attackers can hide tiny electronic components inside charging cables. Once connected, the cables can install malware on a victim’s device.
In a statement published on July 10, BSSN said the modified cables look almost identical to ordinary charging cables. That makes them difficult for users to recognize.
“At first glance, it looks like a regular charging cable, but it contains malicious code that can remotely take control of your device and steal your personal data,” BSSN said.
The agency also warned that attackers can remotely access the cable through its IP address. They may then take full control of the connected device and erase evidence of the attack.
In addition, BSSN urged the public to avoid public USB charging stations in airports, hotels, and other public places.
The agency explained that criminals can tamper with built-in USB ports and use them to launch cyberattacks.
Although these attacks currently target individuals, BSSN expects the threat to grow as modification technology becomes cheaper and more accessible.
How to protect yourself
BSSN recommends several simple steps to reduce the risk of cyberattacks:
- Do not borrow charging cables from strangers.
- Buy a new cable if you forget to bring your own while traveling.
- Always use your personal charging adapter.
- Plug your charger into a wall outlet instead of a public USB port.
Following these precautions can help protect your devices and personal data from malware and unauthorized access.
